Seminole Snake Dance

Jerod Tate

Indigenous (Chickasaw Nation)

"Seminole Snake Dance" pays tribute to the memory of Enoch Kelly Haney, a distinguished figure of Seminole/Muscogee heritage. Haney, renowned both nationally and internationally, served as Principal Chief of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and held positions in the Oklahoma Legislature. Notably, he crafted the iconic bronze statue, "The Guardian," atop the Oklahoma State Capitol. Beyond his political endeavors, Haney was a candidate for govenor, humanitarian, and mentor. The composer of "Seminole Snake Dance" cherished a close friendship with Haney. Commissioned by Steve Johnson, Director of Bands for Seminole Jr. High and High Schools, the composition aims to invigorate Johnson's drum-line percussion section with a fresh and dynamic piece. Drawing inspiration from an ancient Seminole Indian snake dance, the music serves as a celebration of both Haney and Johnson. Commencing and concluding with a triumphant rendition of the snake dance melody, the piece resonates with the profound positive spirit embodied by these two remarkable individuals (Tate, 2022).
